Guest speaker:

Les Gainsford, MPI

BVSc, MPI-Verification Services, Veterinary Technical Supervisor, Warranted Animal Products Officer, Warranted Animal Welfare Officer, Animal Welfare Coordinator

Les started his career as a Mixed practice Veterinarian based in Rotorua and then in 1998 he joined MAF, as MPI was formerly known and completed his meat hygiene and certification training in Hastings. After a short period of work in Waikato, he headed overseas again, and worked for the UK Meat Hygiene Service for 2 years. This was an interesting period, dealing with the aftermath of Mad Cow Disease and being in the centre of the most recent Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak in the UK.

Les returned to NZ in 2001 and re-joined MAF, and has been an animal welfare coordinator continuously since the positions were created in 2004. This is essentially a voluntary role within a regional team, to help train, mentor and moderate MPI-VS veterinarians’ responses to animal welfare cases that are raised within the team.

We invited Les to speak due to his extensive experience in welfare on farm, during transport and at the works. He will be talking to us about the new animal welfare regulations, and answering any questions you may have!
