Testing calves for BVD - what are the results like for our farmers?
During calving season this spring, we have been testing lots of calves for BVD (over 5200 ear notch samples were tested!). We found one or more BVD positive animal in about 14% of the herds tested – this means there are about 20 Anexa herds out there that are going to have healthier keeper calves now the PIs are gone, and 20 mobs of yearlings that potentially grow faster and have better repro outcomes and 20 less milking herds in 2 years’ time rushing and stressing to find a PI before the planned start of mating. This is an awesome result for these farms. It also means there are 120 farms out there safe in the knowledge that there is no BVD present in this year’s crop of calves.

If you didn’t test your calves at disbudding, it is not too late. We can easily ear notch your calves when we do lepto vaccinations, just ask us when you book us in.
