Research Project Manager

Anexa FVC is a leading provider of veterinary and animal production services to clients across the Waikato region of New Zealand. It presently employs more than 45 veterinarians and 60 non-veterinary staff and operates 14 clinics. The business provides high quality animal health and production services to owners of dairy cattle, dairy goat and sheep and beef enterprises as well as to owners of companion animals.

Cognosco, the research division of the Anexa FVC undertakes applied research with the objective of providing farmers, veterinarians and policy makers with timely, relevant and accurate information to improve animal health, welfare and production outcomes. Cognosco has a close association with clinical veterinarians and the many dairy, beef and sheep and other clients of the clinical business. This ensures the ongoing relevance and practical nature of the team. Cognosco has been operating for more than 18 years and has undertaken more than 200 on-farm research studies predominantly in the areas of mastitis, fertility and nutrition of dairy cattle and goats. Cognosco has local and international collaborations with academic institutions and animal health companies. A number of masters and Ph.D. students have received their primary training at Cognosco and many international students and academics have undertaken projects within the team. The Cognosco has an in-house laboratory predominately focused on phenotypic mastitis microbiology, but with PCR and ELISA capabilities.

Due to a senior team member returning to Canada, we seek to employ a project manager/Scientist.

The key roles of the position are to:
  • Communicate effectively with funders, herd owners, veterinarians and other stakeholders
  • Identify key areas of ongoing and future research across the production animal industries
  • Successfully develop and submit proposals, leading to external research funding
  • Design, implement, analyse and report research projects
  • Undertake development of technical operating manuals, data capture systems and database design to ensure project delivery
  • Ensure appropriate training and on-going coaching and performance of technicians
  • Ensure the health and safety of staff operating on farm and in laboratory
  • Ensure on-going data capture and maintenance of quality of data and ensure that good clinical practise (GCP) standards are met
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of study outcomes to funders, herd owners, stakeholders, technicians, and veterinarians
You will:
  • Have a passion for making a difference to animal’s health, welfare and productivity within farming systems
  • Have a master’s or PhD in a discipline of animal or veterinary science
  • Have excellent communication skills with farmers, veterinarians, scientists, technicians, funders and other stakeholders
  • Have excellent people management skills including the ability to work with herd owners, staff, technical staff and veterinarians
  • Have experience in undertaking clinical field studies involving commercial farmers
  • Have excellent knowledge of management and dairy production systems in New Zealand
  • Have experience in managing projects including financial management
The position reports to Dr. Scott McDougall, manager of Cognosco and will be based in Morrinsville. Some local and international travel may be required.
