Ever thought that someone should make a FITBIT FOR PETS?
Well, here it is.

I am a mixed animal veterinarian in Ngaruawahia, and I offered to trial this product on my retired Heading Dog, Win. I have always worried that somedays she might not be getting enough activity to keep her old joints moving, and I’ve also wondered what she gets up to when I’m not home. So, since just before Easter 2017, I have had the Fit P2 attached to Win’s collar 24 hours a day.

The Fit P2 is an easy to use product. Simply attach the disc to the collar, download the app, register your email, and set up your pet’s profile. This took me about 10 minutes, and it takes about 1 minute to periodically synch/upload the data to your phone (from up to 7-10 meters from the device). The app comes with a lot of helpful features, such as measuring hours of activity and level of activity. Even though it doesn’t measure numbers of steps, metres walked/run, or have GPS ability, it appears to be a reliable measure of activity levels through the day (see pictures). I got good feedback on days that Win didn’t do enough exercise, as well as an insight to her occasional 3am wandering.

The Fit P2 also monitors sleep time, and gives you an idea of how much sleep is “light” or “deep” sleep (see pictures). It also tracks changes in activity and sleep levels per day. Another useful aspect is the fact that it actually sets personalised activity and sleep targets for your pet based on breed, weight, habits and age.
The Fit P2 comes with a host of other tools that I simply wasn’t interested in. The feed guide doesn’t give you any extra information that you can’t get from monitoring your pet’s weight. There is, however, a potentially usefully tool to set reminders (for appointments, flea treatments, etc). There also appears to be a whole community of people using Fit P2s that you can access from the app.

Overall, I feel that the Fit P2 is a fun and useful tool for managing my old dog. There are a few aspects of the app that I don’t use at all, but the information that I do use is simple and easy to understand. I’m going to continue using the Fit P2 as one more tool to help make the later years as fun and healthy as possible for my old dog, Win.
