Teaser management checklist:

Teaser management checklist:
By Tom David, Veterinarian, Anexa Vets Raglan

Keep ewes out of sight, sound, and smell of males for at least 4 weeks.

Introduce teasers for 17 days before mating at a ratio of 1:70-100 in hoggets. This ratio can be dropped a little for ewes (if using teasers).

Swap teaser for fertile ram on tupping date.

Hoggets

Teasers are widely used on hoggets. Using teasers increases the number of hoggets that will conceive early in the mating period

Teasing ewes

There is some debate over whether to tease ewes. Most of this centres around the risk associated with a condensed lambing. Teasers are used less frequently in ewes.

Pros of teasing

  • More ewes lambing earlier. This advances the mean date of lambing without any alteration of mating dates. More lambs will be older and heavier at weaning.
  • Potentially improved profit and production.

Cons of teasing

  • Potential for losses if there is a big storm that coincides with when the bulk of your ewes are lambing.

Should I tease my ewes?

  • Depends largely on your risk appetite. If you are very risk averse, it might not be for you.
